MARK KELLY’S AR-15 ‘STUNT’ PROVOKES PHOTO LEAK

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

Mark Kelly’s campaign against “assault weapons” such as the AR-15 rifle has sparked a local backlash. On March 13, a Tucson, Arizona radio host published a photograph of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords holding an AR-15 rifle at a gun range. Giffords has since confirmed that the photograph is authentic.

James T. Harris, blogging at the website of “101.4 FM The Truth,” wrote:gun

What is wrong with this picture? Absolutely nothing, and prior to the aggressive progressive opportunistic fear mongering in the wake of Sandy Hook, this picture would have raised no eyebrows and garnered little public attention.

However, in response to the exploitative political scheming of Mark Kelly, persons connected to Congresswoman Giffords released this photo in response to what they perceived to be her husband’s hypocrisy.

Subsequently, Breitbart News confirmed the authenticity of the image through law enforcement sources in Arizona, and obtained a copy of the photograph from a source who requested anonymity.

The latter source was present when the photograph was taken, and said that Giffords had requested it for campaign purposes during October 2010.

According to the source, the image sent to Breitbart News was cropped to protect the identity of the person on the right-hand side of the original photograph (to Giffords’s left).

The source, who is a member of the law enforcement community, told Breitbart News:

“We were told she wanted to toughen her image. She asked to come out and she wanted to shoot a rifle. She had one of our guys out there to show her how to shoot an AR-15.”

In January 2011, Giffords suffered near-fatal wounds in a mass shooting while meeting with constituents in Tucson. The perpetrator used a 9mm Glock 19 semi-automatic pistol.

Giffords and husband Mark Kelly have since formed an organization, Americans for Responsible Solutions, to press for policy changes such as limiting the sale of “assault weapons, ” including the AR-15.

Breitbart News reported last week that Kelly attempted to purchase an AR-15 from a gun store in Tucson earlier this month.

Likewise, the AR-15 that Giffords is shown holding in the image is a standard, semi-automatic civilian weapon, according to the source who saw it being taken.

The source saw a campaign official take the photograph, which was later provided to law enforcement personnel as a courtesy, according to the source.

The source says the existence of the photograph has been known in the local law enforcement community for a while: “I’m not the only one who knows about this photo.”

Multiple law enforcement sources in Arizona told Breitbart News that Mark Kelly’s campaign against “assault weapons” has generated resentment within the law enforcement community–and a desire that the photograph be made public.

The source who witnessed the photograph put it this way:

“Giffords and Kelly came across with a different demeanor in 2010. To me, it seems like they’ve done a complete 180 because of what happened. And with the latest controversy–with Mark Kelly doing what he did with the AR-15 stunt–this photo needs to be put out.”

While Kelly declined to comment, Americans for Responsible Solutions spokesperson Jen Bluestein told Breitbart News: “Looks like the photo is cropped.”

Bluestein noted that there are “many images of Gabrielle Giffords with guns,” though she said she had not seen the image of the AR-15 before.

At 1:14 p.m. PDT, Giffords posted two images on her Facebook page with the following statement:

Here are two photos of me that a conservative blog has dug up. I remember both of these days fondly. The first is at the Tucson Police Department firing range. They invited me to test rifles and tasers that they bought with federal funds, which I helped secure. The second was in Afghanistan while I was visiting with our troops serving abroad. My work as Southern Arizona’s Congresswoman frequently put me in close contact with some of the world’s most powerful and deadly weapons – supporting police departments, advocating for the Border Patrol, standing up for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, and supporting my constituents’ and my own Second Amendment rights.

I grew up with guns, and I like owning them. So does my husband Mark. It’s an interest we’ve shared ever since we met. It’s part of my heritage as an Arizonan and it’s my right as an American. Being able to shoot a gun is something I haven’t been able to do since I was shot – because my right arm is paralyzed, and I’m less mobile than I was.

As I member of the House Armed Services Committee, I proudly spent a lot of time with our military, border patrol and state and local law enforcement. I guess the intention of those who have publicized these photos is to somehow call into question my belief that military style assault weapons should be more strongly regulated with background checks and other safeguards. I have never wavered in my support for those who serve our country. I fought to make sure they have the weapons and safety gear needed to carry out their mission, and proper health and mental care when their service ends.

Both sides of the gun violence debate usually miss the point. We don’t have to choose between owning, using, and enjoying guns, on one hand, and preventing gun violence, on the other. Both sides need to come together to support commonsense solutions to gun violence, like keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people like the young man who shot me. That’s why I’m fighting this fight. That’s why I’m working to bring people together to support gun rights and reduce gun violence. I hope you join me.

Serbu Firearms Tells NYPD To Pound Sand

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

Serbu Firearms, makers of a .50 caliber, semi automatic rifle stands with the gun owners of America and they got to take that stand recently when they were approached by the NYPD about obtaining one of their rifles.

This is the original communication sent to Serbu:

On 03/18/2013 01:24 PM, XXXXXXXX wrote:
Mr. Serbu,

My name is XXXXXXXX. I am assigned to the NYPD Firearms and Tactics Section. I have been directed to research a new semi-automatic .50 caliber platform for my department.

Two weeks ago I spoke to Deanne at your office regarding the possibility of obtaining one of your rifles for test and evaluation.

If you would please get back to me either way regarding this proposal I would appreciate it.

XXXXXXXX
NYPD-FTSfirearm

This was the response Serbu sent back:

XXXX,
Yes, I got the message and tried to return the call but got no answer. I appreciate your interest in our BFG-50A; I’m sure it would be an excellent addition to your department’s arsenal. Unfortunately, we have a policy of selling to state law enforcement agencies only what is allowed to be sold to private citizens in that state. Since the passage of the NY SAFE act, the BFG-50A is considered an assault weapon and as such is no longer available to private citizens in the state of New York. Therefore we have to respectfully decline to supply your department with BFG-50A rifles.

Regards,
Mark Serbu

Those communications along with the following message were posted on the Serbu Facebook page.

I feel bad because I’d love to get my rifle into as many police departments as possible…who doesn’t want their law enforcement agencies armed with the best possible tools to take out the bad guys? I heard a rumor that the only other company with a .50 BMG semi-auto rifle in production won’t sell to NY police agencies either. So because of a stupid law the venerable NYPD won’t have the best tools for the job….

Sheriff Disproves Assault Weapons Myths in Live Fire Video

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

Sheriff

You might remember Sheriff Campbell from another video he did in which he basically disproves that limited magazine capacity would slow down a trained shooter.

Now, in this video, he tackles several other gun myths with some live fire demonstrations.

The results shouldn’t be surprising to anyone with experience with firearms.

Banning certain cosmetic features and limiting magazines capacity (when multiple magazines can just be carried) does little to deter crime.

Ken Campbell has over 32 years experience at the Boone County Sheriff Department in Central Indiana. His duties have included K-9 Handler, Crash Reconstruction, Hazardous Material Technician, Reserve Unit Commander and Shift Supervisor. Ken is currently the Sheriff of Boone County Indiana in Lebanon. Firearms training has included Glock, Remington, Colt, H&K, Smith & Wesson and others.

He has Instructor Certification in several less-lethal applications including Oleoresin of Capsicum (pepper spray), Sage International and Taser. Ken has been teaching at Gunsite since 1991. He is a Rangemaster for Pistol, Carbine, Shotgun, Rifle and Submachine gun.

Sheriff: Do magazine bans really work?

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

Sheriff Ken Campbell from Boone County, Indiana is a stand-up guy and then some. I’ve trained with him on two or three occasions and he’s just like one of your best friends at the gun club who happens to be a sheriff.

So, it’s not surprising to see him narrating a video demonstrating how magazine bans are arbitrary and capricious and fail the common sense test of effectiveness.

KenC

The video’s makers at the Second Amendment Foundation note that civilians often face violent attack under conditions similar to law-enforcement officers and that most law-enforcement agencies have migrated to handguns with greater magazine capacity, in part because so many rounds miss the intended target in a critical incident. Even more significantly, even hits sometimes fail to stop the aggressor’s attack in a timely manner.

“It’s not about hunting,” the video notes.

The video cites a host of incidents where police officers nationally, as well as in New York City, fire much more than 15 rounds to stop a violent attack, with a great majority of the shots missing the attacker.

So, with a ten-round or fewer limit, this would leave a civilian like you or me at a greater risk of death or great bodily injury during a criminal attack.

For those worried that civilians, with their lesser requirement for training in states with shall-issue carry laws, will shoot more innocent people with errant shots from their standard capacity magazines, the real world data shows that not to be the case.

The video doesn’t mention it, but police officers employing deadly force in self-defense accidentally shoot the wrong people at a 5.5 times greater rate than civilians. (Shall issue: the new wave of concealed handgun permit laws, Clayton Cramer, David Kopel, Independence Institute Issue Paper. October 17, 1994.)

The video shows that magazine restrictions don’t pass the common-sense test.

They don’t provide opportunities to tackle the attacker, but they do make it harder for civilians to protect themselves and their families from violent attacks.

In short, gun control is classist, sexist and racist.

Gun control is about people control, not crime control, as criminals ignore laws about gun possession just as they ignore laws about armed robbery, homicide, sexual attack, and a plethora of other societal prohibitions.

Criminals do generally abide by the wishes of a good guy with a gun by and large.  If they fail to do so, they often end up perforated, sometimes rapidly and promiscuously, ending their criminal careers rather abruptly.

Oh yeah, and we have to love this video’s creator’s sense of humor demonstrating the “New York Reload” at the end.

And then “Jim” fired a 100+ year old pistol with three, seven-round magazines, starting from an empty gun, in under ten seconds. Did we mention each shot was a hit?

Edit to add:  For those of you skeptical about police officers’ ability to use their guns as well as “Jim”, here’s a tip for the day:  You would not be a wise ban to bet against Sheriff Ken executing that drill with the Colt 1911 just as well.

Senate Democrats Drop Assault Weapons Ban

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Senate Democrats today dropped a controversial proposal to ban assault weapon from a gun control bill they plan to introduce on the floor of the Senate in April.

The decision to drop ban indicated that Democrats could sense that the overall bill likely had no chance of passing with an assault weapons language included.

“I’m not going to try to put something on the floor that won’t succeed,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.  “I want something that will succeed. The worst thing in the world would be to bring something to the floor and it dies there. I am working to put something together than can get 60 votes on the floor.”Weapon

Reid guessed that the measure, sponsored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., had support from fewer than 40 senators, far less than the 60 votes needed for passage

The assault weapons ban will still get a vote. It will be voted on as a standalone measure as an amendment to the base gun control bill. But stripping it off the base bill leaves it vulnerable and decreases the chance of it passing, as it will not receive the same support that it could have if it was bundled with the other less controversial measures.

Last Thursday the Senate Judiciary Committee voted in favor of the assault weapons ban bill during their markup of gun legislation.

Feinstein today told reporters she was informed of the decision by the Democratic leadership on Monday night and was “disappointed” in the decision and that her efforts at the end of the day were not good enough.

The assault weapons ban is just one of the gun measures passed last week by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The committee also voted in favor of a bill to boost school safety money, a bill that would expand federal background checks,  and a gun trafficking bill that makes “straw” purchasing – legally buying a gun to give to a criminal or someone not allowed to have one — illegal.

Reid is working to determine which measures will be included in the Democrats’ base bill and indicated he’d like to get a bill to the floor of the Senate “as soon after recess as I can.”

KIMBER MANUFACTURING, POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

I have been a life long advocate of Kimber Manufacturing and own or owned several of their 1911’s and rifles. That was until recently…

For years now I have had conversations with people or read online that Kimber has gone down hill over the last 5 years. Product coming from the factory not in perfect working order, a magnitude of problems with the newer models and just an overall sour taste for the company. But I had defended Kimber to the end, always pushing that even the best manufactures can produce a lemon from time to time.

I recently had knocked my Pro Carry from my night stand and it unfortunately landed on the bobtail. Not being a light firearm, I shattered the top of the main spring housing and caused the rear safety to not function. Additionally, the hammer would not remain in the cocked position. Fearing I had done some real damage, I thought it best to send it to Kimber for repair, after all they are the manufacture.

So I send off the firearm after getting an RMA as well as provide the Kimber customer service rep with my credit card information for processing. It was received by Kimber on the 10th of January. I finally hear back from them about 5 weeks later. While the agent was very nice, she claimed that I had modified the trigger group (trigger job) and that they would need to charge my $260’ish dollars to return it to factory specs before they could repair anything which would be another $60.00 or so. Additionally, they did not have the necessary parts to even perform the repair.

Now, I can certainly understand that for liability reasons they would not wish to work on a modified firearm but she pushed me so hard to do the repair that I told the agent that I would need to call her back so I could think for a second. In the meantime she had emailed me and stated that I could pay for the repair or they could ship it back and I could have the service done elsewhere. I opted for the second choice since I did not care for the way this was being handled. I emailed her my credit card information (2nd time) and she indicated that she would get the firearm out very soon. I was a little distraught that my firearm had been sitting on a shelf for 5-6 weeks and I just paid for it to make a round trip to Kimber with nothing to show for it.

A week goes by and I get another call from Kimber indicating that they needed my credit card information (3rd Request). I asked why they had not sent it out at the beginning of the week as discussed and are just now getting back to me about the credit card information, again. He had no clue. The very next day I get another call from the representative indicating that they needed my credit card information for the 4th time. I was again very polite but frustrated that they could not be more organized with how they do business. She claimed that it would be sent off on Monday. Come Wednesday of the next week, I receive an email that the firearm had finally been shipped via UPS. About two weeks after I had asked that the firearm be returned and over 7 weeks after they received it. My broken firearm was back in my hands.

I took the firearm to a local gunsmith. Upon actually taking the firearm apart, which I do not believe Kimber ever did, the gunsmith was able to determine that what they thought was a trigger job actually was a result of the fall from the nightstand. Apparently since the hammer was back when it fell and under tension, the part of the hammer that locks into the sear was sheared right off. This is what caused the hammer to not remain in the cocked position. Additionally, Kimber’s MSH is made out of a composite plastic and not metal like others. The local gunsmith did the repairs replacing everything they would have at Kimber for less then $130.00 in less then a week.

I share this as I have decided I can no longer support Kimber by giving them my business and ultimately my money. There are a lot of fine gun manufactures out there and I am sure they would be happy to have my business. Not sure if I was being pressured as part of an up sale or if they simply were trying to scam me but they clearly did not have my best interests as their customer in mind. I am only left with the conclusion that the gunsmith at Kimber made zero effort to accurately assess the firearm and was quick to dismiss the damage as modification.

Just remember my story if you every find yourself possibly doing business with Kimber. In my opinion, they truly have gone downhill.

Now This Man Knows Customer Service

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

Dear Valued Customer,

In the spring of ’77, I left the Air Force and moved to Columbia, MO to pursue my dream of running a gun shop. You see, I’d always loved the outdoors; especially shooting and hunting. Some of my fondest childhood memories involve shooting and hunting with my dad and brothers. Then, as an adult, some of my greatest joys have come while shooting and hunting with my wife, my kids, my friends and now my grandkids. I love this industry, I love our way of life and I love serving Customers.

Now, our way of life is being challenged like never before and our Customers are responding with a flood of orders. In the 35 years I’ve been in business, I’ve never seen anything like this.

We’re monitoring the political environment, our industry’s capabilities and our business on a daily basis and making policy and process changes to better serve Customers. But please understand, while we’re still able to get most orders out the same day they’re placed, you may experience longer than normal wait times on the phone or when you chat with us on the web. Also, it’s taking us a few extra days to respond to emails. Finally, we’re out of a bunch of products I know you want which breaks my heart. And when we do get them in, they rarely spend the night in the building because they’re ordered almost immediately. We’re tirelessly working to get products in the door and out to Customers as fast as we can. But, until supply catches up with demand, we’re having to limit quantities and backorders on certain products.

One thing we haven’t done is change our prices because of this surge in demand. Prices do change from time to time as they always have, but we’d never change prices because of something like this. Our pricing strategy is one of the reasons we’ve put quantity limits on certain products. We’ve all seen certain products selling two or three times higher than normal, and MidwayUSA doesn’t want to enable that type of activity. Also, we want to serve as many Customers as possible when we receive high-demand products. If it’s any consolation, none of our Employees can order products with quantity limits (myself included). We’ve all agreed to put Customers first. And that’s the way it’ll always be at MidwayUSA.

As always, everything we do is intended to be in the best interest of our Customers and we’re eternally grateful for your patience and loyalty.

Thanks for Your Business!

Gunmakers threaten to boycott sales to states with gun laws

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

In the growing debate about gun control and the various laws proposed to restrict firearms and magazine capacity, some firearm manufacturers around the nation are threatening to pull back.

More than 70 U.S. companies, ranging from gun shops to gun machinists, are calling for an end to “the police loophole” through a reverse boycott to local and state governments that enact any legislation that infringes upon the Second Amendment.

The companies are publicly refusing to sell any weapons or gear to police where governments have banned the use by civilians.Gun

“There are some states, counties, cities, and municipalities in our great nation that fail to allow their citizens to fully exercise their right to keep and bear arms with restrictions such as magazine capacity or types of firearms that are widely available to citizens of other states, countries, cities, and municipalities,” the group’s website says. “However, these government entities do not place these restrictions upon their own employees, such as police officers.”

The group’s website says they are not against any government agency or individual, but are against gun control.

Idaho-based company Quality Arms joined the movement, saying the company has been under attack from “liberal minded individuals who feel we are the problem of today’s society.” The company says politicians have jumped on the bandwagon to bolster their egos and wish to “destroy the very existence as to how and why those laws came about.”

“We at Quality Arms are against any politician, law enforcement official, and any other organization who feel it is their right and purpose to destroy the freedoms and liberties of the citizens of this country,” the website says. “(We) will not supply any firearm or product, manufactured by us, or any other company nor will we warranty, repair, alter, or modify any firearm owned by any state, county or municipality who infringes on the right of its citizens to bear arms under the 2nd amendment (sic).”

Quality Arms builds semi-automatic sporting rifles used by civilians and law enforcement agencies. Proposed laws by the federal government and some state governments would prohibit many of the firearms the company makes.

Following the shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., Sen. Dianne Fienstein, D-Calif., reintroduced her Federal Assault Weapons Ban act, which would ban more than 150 firearms classified as “assault weapons.” The legislation also prohibits the sale or manufacture of any magazine that is capable of 10 rounds.

The bill, which many gun advocates say limits the rights allowed under the Second Amendment, is expected to be heard on the Senate floor this week.

Arizona-based company American Spirit Arms posted a YouTube video last week, saying the company is standing by their fellow manufacturers.

“American Spirit Arms will stand by our fellow manufacturers in the fight against gun control,” the video says. “As a firearm manufacturer, we’re participating in the stance of only selling firearms that law-abiding citizens can purchase in that state. American Spirit Arms asks for your support in our own campaign in the fight for gun rights.”

Also joining in the reverse boycott is Maine-based manufacturer York Arms, who is attacking a recent law passed by the state of New York. The law adds to the state’s existing ban on assault weapons, number of rounds allowed in magazines and strengthens mental illness rules.

“Based on the recent legislation in New York, we are prohibited from selling rifles and receivers to residents of New York. We have chosen to extend that prohibition to all governmental agencies associated with or located within New York,” the York Arms website says. “We have halted sales of rifles, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, machine guns, and silencers to New York governmental agencies.”

Speaking to more than a thousand people at the Western Hunting and Conservation Expo in Salt Lake City Saturday, National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre urged those in attendance to contact their representatives in an effort to “protect” the rights granted under the Second Amendment.

“As we sit here tonight, we are now facing the single most devastating attack on the Second Amendment that this country has ever seen,” LaPierre said.

LaPierre criticized the recent laws addressed, adding that increased background checks will only limit the Second Amendment even more.

“Don’t you be fooled; there is nothing ‘universal’ nor ‘reasonable’ about (background checks),” LaPierre said. “This so-called background check is aimed at one thing: registering your guns. When another tragic ‘opportunity’ presents itself, that registry will be used to confiscate your guns.”

Although many states are currently addressing limits to gun control, the state of Utah is attempting to loosen their laws by allowing residents of the state to open or conceal carry without a permit. Under current state law, residents can open carry without a permit if the firearm is unloaded, but must obtain a concealed weapons permit if they choose to conceal their firearm.

Police Raided a House Because He Posted a Picture of a Toy Mortar

Monday, February 18, 2013

The British police officers that raided Ian Driscoll’s Tewkesbury home found the mortar they were looking for. They just didn’t expect it to be plastic. Or a model.

“The Action Man looked a bit like me, so I decided to put it as my Facebook picture,” Driscoll, who makes models for a living, explained to the Daily Mail. “I didn’t even notice the mortar in the background.” But someone else did and promply reported him to authorities.

Not to be accused of being soft on gun crime, the police obtained a search warrant and sent officers round to Driscoll’s home to investigate. Five vans-worth of police—armed with real guns—apparently without bothering to actually look at the photo. Otherwise, they’d probably have noticed that the mortar in question is just slightly larger than an action figure and roughly as long as the remote control also pictured.Police

“It’s tiny and quite clearly a toy. I can’t stop laughing. I think it’s hilarious,” Driscoll said. The raiding officers were understandably chagrined at the mix-up but defend their response.

According to Gloucestershire police spokesman Alexa Collicott,

The information was given to us in good faith and we acted with good intentions. We are sure that the community would rather we acted quickly on information given to us of this nature, in case it had turned out to be a weapon. The officers attending were hugely relieved that it wasn’t anything more sinister and we would much rather have a result like this than to put the public in harm’s way by not taking action.

Or, you know, perform a bit of “police work” before sending in the brute squad.
